CROP Hunger Walk 2014: Walking to Make a Difference

NSUMC CROP Walk 2014Sunday, October 26 was a beautiful day for the annual Brookhaven CROP Hunger Walk with brilliant sunshine, crisp fall air, and crunchy leaves underfoot! The 19 walkers representing NSUMC joined folks from the host church, Setauket Presbyterian, Mt. Sinai UCC, and several other congregations, for the three-mile trek through the streets of Setauket. NSUMC Outreach

NSUMC Outreach TeamWOW! Our Outreach Ministry includes our entire congregation. Yes, there’s a team of people who meet occasionally, make decisions, and set times to do specific tasks—most of the team members appear in this photo. But it is the whole congregation that makes our ministry as effective as it is. Many people bring items for the pantry, and every single item is needed and appreciated. Many people participate in funding all of our recurring projects such as Back to School or Adopt a Child for Christmas, as well as occasional one-time collections that arise from natural or people-made disasters. Give Thanks in All Circumstances

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

NSUMC stained glass window crossThanksgiving is a wonderful tradition for us to remind ourselves of God’s blessings in our lives. Sometimes it is a difficult time when we are in the midst of life’s predicaments, or when we mourn for the loss of a loved one. Often our struggles make us blind to see God’s blessings in those circumstances. Therefore we need to intentionally count God’s blessings, starting with “I can see. I can hear. I can talk. I can move my lingers. I have food enough to fill my stomach. I have a warm place to sleep…”, in order for us to refocus on eternal God by using our minds. Continue reading

NSUMC Outreach

The Outreach Ministry’s finest moments occur in times of emergency or urgent need, and involve many people in the congregation, not just the few who are listed as team members. One such moment occurred recently. A family in the midst of a tragic crisis had to move very suddenly to a new location. They were referred to our church by counselors in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Continue reading

Welcome to Fady Deeb, Our New Director of Music

Fady Deeb comes to NSUMC from Israel via SUNY Stony Brook where he is in the fifth year of his doctoral program in the piano under the direction of Gilbert Kalish.

Former Director of Music Stephen Gamboa recommended Fady. “Stephen’s recommendation got Fady an interview with the Staff Parish Relations (SPR) team,” said team leader Linda Orth. “He did the rest on his own.”

Pantry and Garden:

Our Outreach Ministry is blessed in so many ways. Even when it seems like our pantry supplies are low, somehow we are always able to accommodate the requests for food. That’s because of very regular donations from many in the congregation and partners from outside the church. Just when we had no more peanut butter and jelly, for example, two angels from Teachers Federal Credit Union in Wading River came with several boxes full. Continue reading

Farewell to Stephen Gamboa

After five wonderful years with Stephen Gamboa as Director of Music, the congregation bid him farewell on August 24. Stephen is now at an extremely selective education program “for students who wish to study their craft at the highest level.” Tears of joy for Stephen’s talent, good fortune, and bright future mixed with tears of sadness. Fortunately, Stephen made sure that the church will experience a smooth transition by recommending his very talented friend Fadi Deeb, who we welcomed the following Sunday. All is well in our music ministry. Continue reading
