Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan House

golf_outingBaiting Hollow Golf Club will be the site for the August 20 golf outing. All proceeds will go to the Good Samaritan House Fund. Put together your best foursome and register by August 10. Eighty golfers is the limit.

The $150 cost per golfer includes lunch, greens fees, golf cart, the driving range, the beverage cart on the course, cocktail hour, dinner, and prizes. Continue reading

Thrift Shop Update

thriftshopAll is well with the Thrift Shop. A plethora of donations continue to appear every week: clothing and a variety of household and other items. Without the donations, the shop would not only lack the fresh inventory that regular clients long for, but soon would have nothing to sell. Bach is Back

Carnegie Hall comes to NSUMC on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 7:30 PM when our favorite organist and harpsichordist Dr. Stephen Gamboa plays the music of Johann Sebastian Bach accompanied by renowned musicians Louise Schulman (viola) and Amanda Tabor (French horn). Don’t miss this special evening of beautiful classical music by Bach and other composers, benefiting the Good Samaritan House. Suggested donation: $15 at the door.

Community Garden

Future location of the Community Garden.

A couple of years ago I attended a workshop of Long Island Council of Churches, and learned about a vital ministry to serve the community: a community garden. On Long Island some nonprofit organizations and churches have community gardens and provide fresh vegetables to needy people and to soup kitchens. Dix Hills United Methodist is one of them. I discussed this ministry with a few church members. They were enthusiastic and started organizing it. Then our church member Jacob Morabito offered to build the community garden as his Eagle Scout service project. His project plan was approved by our Board of Trustees in March and by his Scout board in April. Continue reading

Thrift Shop has reopened

Thrift Shop ClipartThe Thrift Shop reopened yesterday, Saturday, February 8, 2014 to a new season. Staff warmly greeted the shoppers, many of whom were pleased to find the doors open once again. The shop had closed for the winter break from December 15 until February 7. (Store hours: Thursday and Saturday from 9:30 to 12 noon.)
